Itzam Zapata


Itzam Zapata is a Mexican guitarist, composer and educator who studied at the Escuela Superior de Música in Mexico City, the Mozarteum in Austria, and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he received his Bachelor's degree in guitar and composition and Master's degree in composition.

Itzam has performed in many festivals around the world, including the XXIII Zacatecas Cultural Festival, the UNAM International Guitar Week in Mexico, the Fire Festival, in Cuba, the Korvat Auki 35 fest in Finland, and lately UngNordiskMusik festival in Denmark, among others.  Itzam is devoted to the promotion of new music and he has premiered more than 10 pieces from various composers including the commission of 6 new pieces for guitar duo from Mexican composers for his debut album with Josefina Robles. 

As an educator, Itzam taught guitar and music theory at Taidetöölö Music School in Helsinki, and has been a guest lecturer in the University of Louisville and the University of Montreal. Itzam's teaching methods combine the best sides of Scandinavia’s highly supportive, logical, systematic and constructive pedagogy with a touch of flexibility, freedom and the love of playing from Latin American music education.
